Rev. Dr. Mozel Sanders was appointed in 1959 as Pastor of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Rev. Sanders worked diligently to provide for his congregation and community. He received statewide awards and recognition, but he is best known throughout Indiana for feeding families and the annual Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving

After his demise in 1988, Rev. Sanders’ son, Rev. Roosevelt Sanders, answered the call and formed the Mozel Sanders Foundation (MSF) to continue the traditions of its namesake. The Rev. Roosevelt Sanders departed from the earth last summer. Now 40 years after its inception, under the leadership of his wife, new CEO Stephanie Sanders, the Mozel Sanders tradition continues.  With our leaders, donors, community partners, and volunteers the Thanksgiving Dinner Event serves over 40,000 hot dinners from 40 satellite locations to families across Marion County and Central Indiana.

The Rev. Roosevelt Sanders Empowerment Scholarship is a continuation of the rich tradition of urban empowerment established by the Rev. Mozel Sanders. After a hiatus, the Scholarship was re-launched in 2008 by Rev. Roosevelt Sanders with support of the Finance Center Federal Credit Union. Our goal is to inspire students to realize their potential and achieve their dreams; to empower students to believe and succeed beyond their circumstance. and be responsible for their future.

The Rev. Roosevelt Sanders Empowerment Scholarship is about recognizing urban youth who have exhibited the spark and have attracted the attention and care of teachers, administrators and community leaders who believe the potential of our youth can be released with encouragement, empowerment and love.
